Production volume in 2003 - 4,247 vehicles.
In the years 1928-52 GM India assembled
passenger cars under the Chevrolet brand name and in the years 1928-59 also trucks under
the same trademark. In 1996 GM India Limited, formed in 1994, launched vehicles under the
Opel label. In June 2003 the company started the assembly of the Korean Daewoo Lacetti sedan,
bringing it out on the market under the brand name of Chevrolet Optra (25% of its components
are of local origin). The vehicle houses a 1.8-liter 115 hp engine. Since 2003 the Japanese Subaru
Forester with a 2.0-liter 120 hp engine has been imported to India, marketed here as
Chevrolet Forester. In May 2004 the company launched the production of the 10-seat Tavera
minivan with a TD 2.5-liter 80 hp engine based on the Indonesian Isuzu Panther. In 2004 GM purchased the
Indian Daewoo production facility, which in the years 1985-98 rolled out Toyota
trucks and in the years 1995-2002 Daewoo cars. In 2005 the Spark hatchback is
scheduled to come off the production line in the newly bought facility.
